Pokesdown Youth Centre
This youth club in Stourvale Road, Southbourne is one of the oldest in the country and is set to become a key YMCA proect in the coming years. Many thousands of young people have benefited from the centre during over 100 years that it has been in operation. It was handed over to Bournemouth YMCA in 2000 so that we could continue to develop and expand the work to meet the needs of young people and the community in the 21st century.
The centre has undergone a £4.5 million rebuild with the support of numerous funders including MyPlace who were a key contributor. It is now a world class, state of the art facility boasting a large main multi-purpose hall to be used for adult, youth and children’s events. This can range from birthday parties, dance and drama classes to business conferences and production including full theatre performances with state of the art lighting and sound, all in an air conditioned room.
The building also includes:
- Southbourne Childrens’ Centre
- A bespoke youth club area
- Training kitchen
- Fully equipped recording studio and control room
- Multi-purpose training room
- Media training suite
- 10 single bed accommodation for young people.
The facilities are all accessible to the young people in the area and will also be available to the wider community to use.
The club aims to provide a safe gathering place for young people and to provide a mix of formal and informal learning opportunities in a light atmosphere, helping young people to develop both hard and soft interpersonal skills. It is operated by trained youth workers who are able to provide support, advice and encouragement to the young people at a critical time in their lives, enabling them to maximise their potential.

Fusion Youth Centre
This flagship town centre youth project in Old Christchurch Lane is run as a partnership between Bournemouth YMCA and Bournemouth Youth Service. It is a non-alcoholic club aimed at young people in the 13 to 19 year age group who, due to a lack of facilities, congregate on the streets of Bournemouth.
This initiative provides a music venue in the basement, a non-alcoholic bar and information area on the ground floor and a training area on the first floor. In addition to providing a safe place to gather, it provides a range of entertaining and engaging activities.
There are opportunities for young people to build relationships with qualified youth workers and to access much needed support and advice at a critical time in their lives. It offers training in areas such as:
- Life skills
- Music workshops
- Arts/performance and much more.
The project also forms a training ground for volunteers and for potential youth workers and is empowering for young people themselves since they are very much involved in the running of the centre.
- Thurs: 18:00-20:30
- Fri: 18:30-21:00
- Sat: 18:30-21:00
This is a high profile youth provision and in recent years has seen visits from Iain Duncan-Smith, leader of the Conservative party, and Prince Edward on behalf of the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme.
